  1.     RSGB Islands on the Air Contest 1996

  3. 1.  GENERAL.
  4.  
  5.     The aim of the contest is to promote contacts between stations
  6.     in qualifying IOTA island groups and the rest of the world and
  7.     to encourage expeditions to IOTA islands.  
  8.  
  9.     Please note the changes to Rules 4(a) to 4(c)

  12. 2.  WHEN. 
  13.  
  14.     1200 UTC Saturday 27th July to 1200 UTC Sunday 28th July 1996.

  17. 3.  BANDS AND MODES.
  18.  
  19.     3.5, 7, 14, 21 and 28MHz, CW and SSB.  IARU    bandplans should be
  20.     observed, with CW contacts beinf made only in the recognised
  21.     CW ends of the bands.  Contest preferred segments should also be
  22.     observed, i.e. no operation taking place on 3.560 - 3.600 MHz,
  23.     3.650 - 3.700 MHz, 14.060 - 14.125 and 14.300 - 14.350 MHz.

  26. 4.  CATEGORIES.
  27.  
  28.     (a) Single operator. CW only, SSB only or mixed-mode.
  29.  
  30.     Only one transmitted signal.  Use of packet cluster or
  31.         other assistance during the contest places the entrant
  32.         in the multi operator category
  33.  
  34.     (b) Single operator limited. CW only, SSB only or mixed-mode.
  35.  
  36.     Operation is limited to 12 hours.  Off periods must be
  37.         clearly marked and must be a minimum of 60 minutes in
  38.         length.

  40.     (c) Multi operator single transmitter. Mixed mode.
  41.  
  42.     Only one transmission at a time permitted.  Please note
  43.         this category is open to IOTA Island Stations only.

  46. 5.  SECTIONS.
  47.  
  48.     (a) IOTA Island Stations.
  49.     Stations on an island with an IOTA reference, for example
  50.         AS007, EU005.  This section includes the British Isles.
  51.     Note: Mainland G/GM/GW is EU005, mainland GI/EI is EU115.

  53.         Entrants intending to operate from a location whose IOTA
  54.         status is not clear are advised to confirm validity by
  55.         reference to the IOTA directory available from RSGB head-
  56.         quarters.  Please indicate on the entry whether the station
  57.         is permanent or a contest DXpedition, i.e. antennas and
  58.         equipment installed specifically for the contest.
  59.  
  60.     (b) World (listed by continent).
  61.     Any station in a location which does not have an IOTA
  62.         reference.
  63.  
  64.     (c) Short Wave Listener.
  65.     See rule 10. The format of the listings will depend on
  66.         the number of entries received.

  69. 6.  EXCHANGE.
  70.  
  71.     Send RS(T) and serial number starting from 001, plus IOTA
  72.     reference number if applicable.  Do not use separate numbering
  73.     systems for CW and SSB.  Stations may be contacted on both CW
  74.     and SSB on each band.  Entrants in section (a) MUST send their
  75.     IOTA reference as part of each contact.

  78. 7.  SCORING.
  79.  
  80.     (a) QSO Points.
  81.     Each contact with an IOTA island counts 15 points.  Other
  82.         contacts count 5 points, except contacts with the entrant's
  83.         own country or own IOTA reference, which count 2 points.
  84.  
  85.     (b) Multiplier.
  86.     The multiplier is the total of different IOTA references
  87.         contacted on each band on CW, plus the total of different
  88.         IOTA references contacted on each band on SSB.
  89.  
  90.     (c) Total Score.
  91.     The score is the total of QSO points on all bands added
  92.         together, multiplied by the total of multipliers.

  95. 8.  LOGS.
  96.  
  97.     Entries are preferred on disk using recognised contest
  98.     software, SDI (Super-Duper for IOTA by EI5DI), CT, NA, but
  99.     must be accompanied by a summary and signed declaration that
  100.     the rules and licence conditions have been complied with.
  101.  
  102.     Paper logs are also acceptable, in which case separate log
  103.     sheets must be used for each band (but not each mode). Single
  104.     mode entrants who make contacts on the other mode should submit
  105.     these separately as checklogs.

  107.     Logs must show:
  108.  
  109.                 Time
  110.                 Callsign
  111.                 RST/serial number/IOTA reference sent
  112.                 RST/serial number/IOTA reference received
  113.                 Multiplier claimed
  114.                 QSO points
  115.  
  116.     Entrants are encouraged to submit cross-check ("dupe") sheets
  117.     and a multiplier list.  Entries must be postmarked 31st August
  118.     at the latest, and mailed to the following address:

  128.     IOTA stations must state their location, i.e. island from where
  129.     they operated, as well as their IOTA reference number. Checklogs
  130.     from non-entrants are welcome.

  133. 9.  PENALTIES.
  134.  
  135.     Points may be deducted, or entrants disqualified, for violation
  136.     of the rules or the spirit of the contest.  This includes
  137.     refusal by IOTA island stations to make contacts with their own
  138.     country when requested.  Use of a third party to make contacts on
  139.     a list or net is also against the spirit and may lead to
  140.     disqualification.  Duplicate contacts must be marked as such with
  141.     no points claimed.  Unmarked duplicates will be penalised at ten
  142.     times the claimed points, and excessive duplicates may cause
  143.     disqualification.

  146. 10. SWL CONTEST.
  147.  
  148.     Scoring is as for the transmitting contest.  Logs must be separate
  149.     for each band, and show
  150.

  154.                 Callsign of station being worked
  155.                 Multiplier claimed
  156.                 QSO points

  158.     Under "callsign of station being worked", there must be at least
  159.     two other QSOs before a callsign is repeated, or else ten minutes
  160.     must have elapsed.  If both sides of a QSO can be heard, they can
  161.     be logged separately for points if appropriate.

  164. 11. AWARDS.
  165.

  168.     (a) Certificates will be awarded to leading stations in each
  169.         category and section, and in each continent, according to
  170.         entry.
  171.  
  172.     (b) The CDXC Geoff Watts Memorial Trophy (non-returnable) will
  173.         be presented to the netrant whether single operator or a 
  174.         multi operator group in the IOTA Islands Stations section
  175.         (non DXpedition subsection) with the overall highest score
  176.         regardless of mode.
  177.  
  178.     (c) The IOTA Trophy (non-returnable) will be presented by the
  179.     IOTA Committee to the entrant, whether single operator or
  180.         a multi operator group in the IOTA Island Stations Section
  181.         (DXpedition subsection), with the overall highest checked
  182.         score, regardless of mode.

  184.     (d) The DX News Sheet Trophy (retained for one year only) will
  185.         be presented to the British entrant operating from a
  186.         location in the UK (including GD, GJ and GU) with the
  187.         highest checked score in the single operator SSB category,
  188.         (Category A). The winner of the IOTA Trophy will not be
  189.         eligible for this award.

  191.     (e) The David King G3PFS Trophy, in memory of Geoff Watts,
  192.         (retained for one year only) will be presented to the
  193.         British entrant operating from a location in the UK
  194.         (including GD, GJ and GU) with the highest checked score
  195.         in the single operator SSB category, (Category B). The
  196.         winner of the IOTA Trophy will not be eligible for this
  197.         award.

  200. 12. NOTE FROM THE IOTA DIRECTOR.
  201.  
  202.     Amateurs planning to activate an all-time new one for IOTA over
  203.     the IOTA Contest weekend should, if possible, arrange to commence
  204.     their operation in the preceding 24 hours to enable the new
  205.     reference number to be issued before the start of the contest.
  206.     Once the contest is under way, it will not be possible to issue
  207.     a new number and, without this, contacts made will not count as
  208.     island contacts.
